Dominic Gubb

Dominic Gubb has lived and worked in Wales since studying sculpture in London in 1990.  Having exhibited previously in Australia and France his first major solo show in England is at Stockbridge Gallery – Dogs in Art, June – July 2010.

Dominic’s work has always tried to unlock the promise of reclaimed materials, taking the discarded and the devalued and gently altering its appearance to give new life, new value and new purpose.  In this exhibition his four-legged friends not only display wonderful form and movement but also the very essence of the canine character.  His witty, imaginative sculpture presents familiar items in an unexpected way and is sure to make you smile.

Dominic Comments...

“ I started experimenting with plastic as a sculpting material in response to its abundance and varied forms, and have been impressed by its amazing properties and versatility.  For some of the work I have used HDPE plastic milk bottles in their existing state, gently altering its appearance rather than striping it down and starting from scratch. The process uses heat to reform and fix the High-density polyethylene, laminating and sculpting sections cut from the bottles to produce very strong yet lightweight and permanent forms. I have also experimented with Polyethylene (P.E.T) plastic bottles, which react to heat in a very direct and different way. The aim is to create art to which an audience can form an intellectual attachment, whilst informing and entertaining them about a most unappealing subject – their rubbish.

Plastic in its petroleum state has undergone millions of years of evolution only to be discarded as a by-product of societal needs. “
